  • By winter 2025, The Erly were itching to record the follow up to their 2024 album Salem Lights. They joined Paul Bennett (producer of Midnight River Show and Salem Lights) in his newly renovated basement studio, but after just two songs, Paul pulled the plug. It was realized that The Erly needed a bigger room to accommodate the songs being written. The band (Collin Mattiford, Trevor McDonald, Fran Gleason, and Simon Kauffman Hurst) agreed, opting for authenticity, instead of imitation.

The Erly found themselves at Palisade Studios in Chicago, IL, with just 3 days to track the bulk of the album in May of 2025. Even though The Erly were recording in a large professional studio, the closeness and familiarity of playing together was not lost. They were positioned close together, felt the cues between them, and tapped into the chemistry evident in Salem Lights, but with a much fuller sound.

“On day one, we locked in fast,” says drummer/singer Fran Gleason. “We took brand new songs that were still unfamiliar to us, and just went at it. We were only allowed a few takes with each song, but since we know each other so well, it was an advantage. We were able to react musically in real time with such limitations.”

The Erly left on day one, already excited at the prospect of what could be their sonically best album to date. Alongside Collin, Trevor, Fran, and Simon’s playing, you can hear the room breathe and move as if it were the 5th member of the band, including the in-house grand piano. Keyboardist Simon Kauffman Hurst was practically glued to the bench of the piano, causing the band to jokingly coin Midnight River Show the “The Grand Piano Album”. Kauffman Hust says, “My favorite story/aspect of recording Midnight River Show was how the studio and schedule influenced the whole process. There was a realistic, but close deadline. I really feel like the whole group stepped up to the challenge, and made it happen.”

Since The Erly has been performing on the road nonstop for over two years, the band entered the studio on days two and three with much more ease, treating the studio like a stage. They simply followed where the music wanted to go. Guitarist Trevor McDonald proudly recorded all of his guitar solos live with the band, without overdubs. Trevor admits, “I felt very out-of-body during the recording of ‘Barely Through’” (the band’s longest song to date). “The instrumental section,” Trevor continues, “has a musical climb that usually only happens when a band is performing live in concert. The band exceeded expectations. It’s crazy to think it was landed by the 3rd take.”

Though the band thrives on playing together in the room, The Erly successfully attempted their first time piecing together a song, instead of recording all the instruments at once. Bassist/vocalist Collin Mattiford said, “One of my favorite processes was the reconstruction of “Insane Design”. The full band recording wasn't working, so we decided to break it down, one instrument at a time. I led Fran on drums and Trevor on bass, while I provided a scratch vocal. Once that was done, I recorded the acoustic guitar. Simon then quickly knocked out the organ and piano.”

Per Collin, Midnight River Show allowed The Erly to experiment with different approaches to recording, both in the live room and during overdubs. Collin recollects, “My songs were written from curious seeds that find a way to blossom into the real world. I also just tried stuff. When you listen to Midnight River Show, do so with the understanding that the ones who are responsible for creating these sounds, recording them, putting them onto physical mediums, and handing them off to the world, are no different than you. Individuals who, despite different lives, schedules, ideologies, and personalities, were able to come together for a set amount of time and capture a series of moments. There's no mystery, no secret ingredient, and no higher calling. Just people making music for other people to hear.”

After concluding recording of Midnight River Show, The Erly realized they evolved away from the folk/americana sounds of Salem Lights and into a Heartland Rock sound. With sonic tendencies similar to Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, many of the songs include singlong choruses with introspective lyrics, reflecting on the modern world.

  • Niles, Michigan band, The Erly, formed in late 2017 by vocalist/bassist Collin Mattiford and vocalist/drummer Fran Gleason. Trevor McDonald joined soon after on guitar and vocals, turning a last minute “musician wanted” ad into a Craigslist success story. The band released albums Shadows (2018), Reckless (2021), and Culture Fever (2023), building a loyal regional following with songs like “Flame The Main,” “Red Roof Inn,” “Hey Amanda,” and “Jasmine”.

The Erly’s trajectory shifted with the addition of keyboardist Simon Kauffman Hurst and the release of Salem Lights (2024). The album, and its singalong centerpiece “55 On The Other Side,” helped push the band onto the national stage, playing alongside acts such as Sixpence None The Richer, Cracker, and Max.

By mixing structure and spontaneity, The Erly bring a “jam-adjacent” sound to their live performances that differ from night to night. The sound of folk and Americana vocal harmony mixes with jazz, rock, funk, and soul to create a unique experience.

On August 21st, 2026, The Erly presents Midnight River Show, the fifth album in their catalog. Recorded in Chicago, IL at Palisade Studios, this album brings The Erly’s biggest and boldest sound. With producer Paul Bennett at the helm, Midnight River Show brings tales of triumph, woe, and all the in-betweens. The album’s lead single, “Finish Line” is out on all streaming services on June 3rd.

Midnight River Show - Track by Track

The Erly is

Collin Mattiford: Bass/Vocals

Fran Gleason: Drums/Vocals

Trevor McDonald: Guitars/Vocals

Simon Kauffman Hurst: Keyboards/Vocals

All songs written by Mattiford/Gleason/McDonald/Kauffman Hurst (BMI)

  1. Spell You Cast - The opening track to Midnight River Show, “Spell You Cast” is an ode to driving, the travellers you meet on the road, and the people waiting for you at your destination. From late night gas station stops, to endless rows of beaming billboard signs along the road, ”Spell You Cast” explores the highs, the lows, and what keeps us travelling down the road.

  2. Insane Design - “Insane Design” acts as a beacon in the middle of a storm. The song traverses the constant back and forth in your own head, the denial that comes with progress, and the accepting of pushing forward, regardless of what will happen.

  3. Riley - Track 3 on the album, “Riley” is a a song of nostalgic love. It reads as a formative chapter of a relationship gone by.

  4. Marry A Painter - Acting as a romantic fantasy, “Marry A Painter” explores what it would be like to be with someone who expresses themselves through a visual medium. It also tackles the importance of honesty in a relationship. If there's anyone you should be with, it should be someone who sees you for who you are, imperfections and all.

  5. Hundred Dollar Bill - Written on the spot in the studio, Hundred Dollar Bill, examines false security through fragile relationships. The narrator seeks validation through simple reminders and easy apologies, leading him to feel like a hundred bucks. Even though in the moment he feels grand, overtime the value of his feelings will deflate.

  6. Fuze Fire - Thinking about the subtle physical disturbances during anxiety, the lyrics are based on what someone would be feeling during an intense situation. Juxtaposed with the melodic acoustic guitars, “Fuze Fire” stands out on the album as the number one contender of “lie on the floor” music by The Erly.

  7. Limestone - Tales of hitchhiking, underage drinking, and the characters you meet beneath the neon lights, “Limestone” is a rowdy tale of man trying not to go home alone. Bootlegged whiskey, beer outta fishbowls, and drinking up all your money, “Limestone” is a party within itself.

  8. It’s Easy - A song about how the easy path ain’t the one to choose, “It’s Easy” is The Erly jamming out in the studio. Alongside a piano solo and a guitar solo, are two simple phrases. The most experimental track by The Erly to date.

  9. Barely Through - With each verse sang by a different member of the band, Barely Through tackles a messy romantic situation from multiple points of view. The longest song in the Erly’s studio repertoire, the final jam, orchestrated by Simon Kauffman Hurst, was improvised in the studio.

  10. Finish Line -  Written while on tour in Delaware, "Finish Line" explores the question on every aging indie musician’s mind: Is this all worth it? The song delivers its answer with a driving beat and soaring guitar licks, telling listeners that if the people who matter most to you are waiting at the finish line, it’s been worth it all along.

  11. Winter Nights - “Winter Nights” delivers a song discussing the emotional state of seasonal depression and how one strives for resolution.
