South West Michigan indie-rock band, The Erly, recently hit the road to Milwaukee, Wi, to film a music video for their song “Let It Roll” at Riverwest staple Flacon Bowl. The Erly partnered with a Milwaukee-based crew led by filmmaker Gabe Brusky, who directed and wrote the screenplay for the music video. Songwriter and lead vocalist, Collin Mattiford describes the song as, “ A single person at their wits’ end. Not caring what happens to them anymore. They roll the dice on life and let the chips fall where they may.” This narrative is reflected on the screen with Mattiford as the main character, binge drinking as he bowls with his fellow bandmates. At first, he finds comfort in his liquid courage. His vices quickly consume him. The more he becomes isolated and controlled by the drink, the more empty the bowling alley becomes. These shots are interlaced with performance shots by The Erly playing the song at Falcon Bowl’s main concert hall.

About Falcon Bowl: Founded in the late 1800s, Falcon Bowl has been a staple of Milwaukee’s Riverwest Neighborhood for over 120+ years. With the addition of the 6-lane basement bowling alley in 1915, Falcon Bowl has since been the 6th oldest operating alley in the country (https://falconbowlmke.com/info).

Track 1: “Let It Roll” studio recording. Track 4 on Salem Lights, and newest single from The Erly, Let It Roll perfectly encapsulates The Erly’s sound and feel for their current phase. Featuring The Erly’s bassist, Collin Mattiford, on lead vocals, the song is about a single person at their wits’ end. Not caring what happens to them anymore. They roll the dice on life and let the chips fall where they may. The sparse arrangement helps pack an emotional, raw punch.

Track 2: Let It Roll (Acoustic). Recorded at producer Paul Bennett’s studio, this recording features The Erly’s Collin Mattiford on acoustic guitar/lead vocals and Trevor McDonald and Fran Gleason on backing vocals.

Track 3: Let It Roll (Live at The Elephant Bar, Goshen, IN (1/28/2025). This recording caught The Erly at The Elephant Bar in Goshen, IN for their 8th residency show. Clocking in at 10 minutes, this song features drummer Fran Gleason and bassist/vocalist Collin Mattiford laying down the foundation for an emotional organ solo from keyboardist Simon Kauffman Hurst and an electrifying guitar solo from guitarist Trevor McDonald.

About The Erly

Niles, Michigan band, The Erly, features Collin Mattiford on bass/vocals, Trevor McDonald on guitar/vocals, Fran Gleason on drums/vocals, and Simon Kauffman-Hurst on keyboards.

Performing togeher since 2018, The Erly has released four studio albums, including the newest in their catalog, an 11-track americana rock album called ‘Salem Lights’ (9/4/24). Featuring each member on lead vocals, it contains narrative-driven lyrics that paint southern-gothic landscapes amongst emotional, rootsy playing. Born out of happenstance, a jam sesh with intent to create demos in Gleason’s basement, ‘Salem Lights’ evolved into a completed body of work. Produced by Paul Bennett, the band describes the album as, “No metronome, all the microphone bleed you can get, and the true sound of The Erly working together in their natural state.” Though this album finds The Erly at their most relaxed, they are no strangers to creating a high-octane, jam-adjacent live performance. They have performed at concert halls, bars, and festivals across the US and have opened for artists such as Cracker, MAX, and Miles Nielson and The Rusted Hearts. The Erly has been featured in Grateful Web, Earmilk, The Globe, and many more!
